Understanding crop conditions to make more informed decisions

An independent consultant who works in the agricultural space is encouraging farmers to continue scouting fields and monitoring crop conditions.

Ken Ferrie, the owner of Illinois-based Crop-Tech Consulting, was a featured speaker today during the DEKALB/Asgrow field day in Elizabethtown, Indiana.

“This is not a very pleasant time to be out there. It’s wet in the morning and hot in the afternoon, but this is go time for the scouting teams and the farmers to get out and get a good evaluation of where their crop is,” he says.

He tells Brownfield, “and if it’s not where they want it to be, now we have evidence to tell us why it’s not. If there’s a bigger issue than they anticipated, it gives them some help in the marketing decisions that they got to make in storage and stuff like that. Right now is the best time they can spend in the field. Not that they shouldn’t have been scouting fields earlier, because they should have been, but right now is what they have to live with, and it’s a good idea to know if you could improve anything over next year or if you accomplished what you attempted to.”

Ferrie also encouraged growers to understand the current condition of the crop, hybrid characteristics, as well as the importance of managing fertility.
