UN report: World hunger is on the rise again

After steadily declining for over a decade, global hunger is on the rise again, according to the United Nations.

In a report on world food security and nutrition, the UN says hunger affected 815 million people in 2016, or 11 percent of the global population.

The increase—38 million more people than the previous year—is largely due to the proliferation of violent conflicts and climate-related shocks such as floods and drought, according to the UN. It says the two are related, with conflicts increasingly compounded by climate change.

Asia, with 520 million, and Africa, with 243 million, account for the vast majority of hungry people in the world.
