U.S.-Mexico trade deal has zero ag tariffs

President Trump during Oval Office news conference call with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto announcing a new trade agreement between the countries 8/27/18

The U.S. Trade Representative’s Office says that if ratified, the key achievement of the new U.S. and Mexico trade agreement announced yesterday would be zero tariffs on ag products for both countries. President Trump says it’s a good deal for farmers.  “Our farmers are going to be so happy.”

Trump says the two countries will benefit almost immediately.  “The farmers have stuck with me.  I said we were going to do this and Mexico has promised to immediately start purchasing as much foreign product as they can.  They’re going to work on that very hard.”

Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer says they will submit a letter to Congress on the deal this Friday starting the ratification process, and by law, Congress will have 90 days to consider it.

Trump also says trade negotiations with Canada will resume almost immediately, which is something Mexico’s President also wants.
