Tyson ‘not surprised’ by Pacelle’s plan

Tyson Foods, in a statement released to the media, says it is not surprised that Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) president and CEO Wayne Pacelle plans to seek election to the Tyson board of directors.

Tyson says it will handle the nomination according to the law and the company’s by-laws.

Pacelle announced this week that he has filed paperwork as a candidate for election to the Tyson board. Pacelle says his chief objective is to get Tyson to commit to a definite time frame to phase out the use of gestation stalls for sows.

So far, Tyson has resisted pressure from HSUS to move towards stall-free pork production.

In its statement, Tyson said it is “committed to humane animal treatment and expects the same from the independent family farmers who supply us with chickens, hogs and cattle.”
