Trump tweets that USMCA is “dead in the water”

President Trump calls USMCA “dead in the water.”

In a tweet over the weekend that referred to House Democrats like Speaker Nancy Pelosi as the “Do Nothing Democrats,” Trump expressed frustration that important legislation isn’t getting done.

Pelosi recently cast doubt on ratifying USMCA this year, saying there might not be enough time even if a deal was agreed to now.

Many farm groups have been calling for Congress to ratify the agreement, but Minnesota Farmers Union president Gary Wertish tells Brownfield important issues still need to be hammered out.

“Whether it’s labor, enforcement or environment, if we don’t have strong enforcement in those countries a lot of our jobs will end up moving to Mexico anyway. That doesn’t help us.”

He says worst case, President Trump withdraws from NAFTA.

“And that’s his prerogative, he can do that if he so chooses. But that will be another knife in the back of our family farmers, just trying to prove a point.”

Wertish says it’s better for all sides to remain at the table to iron the remaining issues out.

Congress is scheduled to adjourn for the year December 13th.

Brownfield interviewed Wertish at Minnesota Farmers Union’s annual convention Saturday in the Twin Cities.

  • Tell Mr. Trump to start thinking about your problems…mistake leaving NAFTA. AndCongress can postpone closure and deal with this.Farmers a re imporant.
