Torres Small nominated for key USDA post

President Biden has nominated Xochitl Torres Small to serve as USDA Deputy Secretary.

Torres Small, who’s currently the Under Secretary for Rural Development, would succeed Jewel Bronaugh who is stepping down from the position. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says Torres Small’s experience will further the agency’s mission to advance equity and opportunity for rural America.

Kevin Shea, Administrator of USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), will serve as Acting Deputy Secretary while Torres Small awaits confirmation.
