The economic impact of the equipment manufacturing industry in the Midwest

A leader with the Association of Equipment Manufacturers says the Midwest continues to be the beating heart of the equipment manufacturing industry.

Kip Eideberg is the senior vice president of government and industry regulations with AEM.

“Our economic footprint continues to be focused around the Midwest, which is really the historical home of the equipment manufacturing industry. You look at states like Iowa, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, etc. A large concentration of our industry is based there,” he says.

The 2023 AEM Economic Impact Report prepared by S&P Global Market Intelligence estimates the contribution of the agriculture, construction, and mining equipment manufacturing to the U.S. economy. It also breaks down the industry’s contribution by state.

Illinois supports nearly 239,000 equipment manufacturing jobs and the state’s equipment manufacturing industry contributes $37.6 billion.

Wisconsin supports more than 181,000 equipment manufacturing jobs and the state’s equipment manufacturing industry contributes $21.8 billion.

Ohio supports more than 153,000 equipment manufacturing jobs and the state’s equipment manufacturing industry contributes $19.6 billion.

Indiana supports more than 138,000 equipment manufacturing jobs and the state’s equipment manufacturing industry contributes $18.2 billion.

Iowa supports nearly 132,000 equipment manufacturing jobs and the state’s equipment manufacturing industry contributes $18.2 billion.

Michigan supports more than 118,000 equipment manufacturing jobs and the state’s equipment manufacturing industry contributes $14.9 billion.

Minnesota supports nearly 79,000 equipment manufacturing jobs.

Eideberg says the industry’s impact also varies across congressional districts.

“The four congressional districts where we have the largest concentration of members would be the four congressional districts of Iowa,” he says. “Number five is the fifth congressional district of Wisconsin.”

The Association of Equipment Manufacturers is the North American-based international trade group representing off-road equipment manufacturers and suppliers, with more than 1,000 companies and more than 200 product lines in the agriculture and construction-related industry sectors worldwide.
