Thanksgiving storms could end harvest

Massive storms moving across the Midwest could threaten remaining crops left to harvest.

“There will be very little fieldwork activity in the Midwest or other areas that receive this heavy precipitation, so an indefinite hold on that remaining corn and soybean harvesting

USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey says, fortunately, most soybeans have been harvested but about 20 percent of the crop remains in fields in Wisconsin and Michigan.

“We could lose some of that remaining acreage without ever being able to harvest it.”

Nearly 16 percent of the nation’s corn crop is also still unharvested.

Two massive storms are expected to cover most of the U.S. this week, bringing high winds, thunderstorms, rain, snow, hail and even tornadoes in some areas which Rippey expects to bring one to three inches of precipitation.  Parts of the Upper Midwest, Minnesota to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, could see at least a foot of snow.
