Survey: COVID-19 is changing consumer perception of the food supply chain

Consumers are concerned about food availability, safety, and affordability during the coronavirus pandemic according to a new survey by G&S Business Communications.

Managing Director Caryn Caratelli says COVID-19 is changing consumer perceptions of the food supply chain.

“The majority of Americans surveyed are more concerned about their food availability at 77 percent, food safety at 69 percent, affordability at 58 percent,” she says. “Across the board they’re very concerned and focused in on how they’re going to be able to feed their families moving forward.”

She says consumers are changing their food purchasing behaviors.

“One third of the individuals surveyed have said they made changes to where they shop for their food and groceries and they are spending more time cleaning their produce and packaging when they return home from the store,” she says.

The survey also shows that people are more concerned about food waste and food quality since the coronavirus outbreak.

More than 1,000 people who are a representative sample of the population were surveyed in mid-April.
