Sugarbeet harvest deliveries remaining steady for October

Michigan sugarbeet harvest is expected to progress slowly this month as farmers are called in for early delivery.

ACH Seeds Great Lakes sales manager Andy Bernia tells Brownfield recent rains haven’t impacted field conditions too much.

“Growers are saying that they were wanting a little rain now with field conditions getting a little hard after being so wet for so long and then drying out recently,” he says.  “Sounds like a little rain now is not going to hurt things too much.”

He says this week’s weather will support sugar development.

“We’ve got a great crop coming, lots of tons,” he shares.   “We need some nice cool days and some sunshine to get our sugar content up.”

Bernia expects the Michigan Sugar Company to start permanent piles for beets about October 20.
