Storms cause crop damage and losses in parts of Indiana

Severe storms and tornados caused severe crop damages in parts of Indiana Wednesday night.

Kent Chism farms in North Central Indiana – he says the tornado first touched down west of his farm and hit a hog barn.  “They were busy moving hogs last night,” he says.  “And then it kind of skipped around.  It landed and then skipped around through the rest of the county and doing a lot of crop damage to both corn and beans.”

He tells Brownfield the damage varies – but there are some fields that are a total loss.  “The corn that it hit – some of it is pretty flat,” he says.  “Some of it isn’t as flat.  The flat stuff – or what broke off – there is not going to be much salvage value there.”

Chism says most soybean fields aren’t total losses – but harvest will be a lot more challenging.  “Most soybeans will probably be okay,” he says.  “But they’re going to be harder to get – the ones that are laid flat or leaning a lot will come back a little bit.  They’re just going to be hard to get.”

While the tornado caused damages to crops and buildings – everyone was safe.  “That’s been one blessing out of it,” he says.
