Spring weather limits fieldwork

Southern Indiana farmer Ben Kron says cool and wet conditions have limited fieldwork on his farm.

“We did a little bit of spraying last week,” he says. “Other than that, as far as planting, nobody has really done anything planting wise in our area and we haven’t either. Temperatures are all over the place, averaging highs in the 50s and lows sometimes down even in the 30s, so we haven’t gotten the planters out yet. I’ve been itching to get a little bit of anhydrous put on, but it seems about every time it almost gets dry enough to do that it starts raining again.”

He tells Brownfield they should begin planting in the next few weeks.

“It’s probably around the 10th of April or so before we usually get started planting,” he says. “Once it hits the 15th or 20th we’re really itching to get out there because we feel like we should have something done already.”

Kron grows corn and soybeans in Evansville, Indiana.
