Soybean and corn planting underway for farmer

Western Indiana farmer Kevin Cox is trying something new on his farm this year by planting early.
“Our plan going into the spring was to try to get more than 500 acres of soybeans in the ground and maybe 100 acres of corn in the ground in that early window,” he says.
He says conditions were warm and dry when they began planting soybeans but have since turned cool and wet.
“We jumped in there the Monday after Easter and started planting soybeans, but weren’t super aggressive about it,” he says. “I was out digging in them yesterday, they’re germinating, and I’m just hoping that they don’t pop out of the ground before another cold snap next week.”
Cox began planting corn this week.
“Despite the quick change, we are planting into some of the most ideal planting conditions I’ve ever planted into and especially for this early,” he says.
He farms in Clay and Parke counties.
