South Dakota farmer talks crop yields, weed management

A farmer in southeast South Dakota is encouraged by yields as harvest continues.

Mitch Mehlhaf of Menno grows corn, soybeans, and works as a crop advisor and seed rep for Pioneer.

“Better yields on both corn and soybeans (compared to) the last couple years in southeast South Dakota. Very much above APH yields on corn, and ten percent or so above APH yields on soybeans.”

He tells Brownfield weed control has been a point of emphasis for farmers dealing with drought conditions the past few years.

“But this year weed control was fairly good on most of the acres around here when a residual herbicide was used pre-emerge and multiple modes of action were used post-emerge on soybean acres late.”

Nearly half of South Dakota’s corn acres are harvested, which is about average.  The soybean harvest is ahead of normal at 90 percent done.
