Soil moisture up in Illinois

A wetter than normal January boosted soil moisture levels in Illinois.

The USDA says average statewide precipitation was more than two inches above normal, pulling most of the state’s soil moisture into adequate to surplus territory, but a few parts of Illinois remain short to very short.

75% of Illinois’ winter wheat crop is in good to excellent shape, 20% more than at the end of December.

The USDA’s weekly crop progress and condition reports resume in April.
