The Slovek Ranch has been selected as the 2023 South Dakota Leopold Conservation Award.  The Philip area cattle ranch has nearly 26-thousand acres of grazing lands managed by Bill and Penny Slovek, and the families of their adult children, Bo, Brock, and Belinda.

In the early 2000s, Bill took over from his father and began developing water infrastructure and removing old fences.  He started using rotational grazing, which led to better infiltration of rainwater, less erosion, and healthier grasslands.

The Leopold Award is presented annually by the Sand County Foundation, American Farmland Trust, South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association, and the South Dakota Grassland Coalition.
