Short-stature corn a big deal at Farm Progress

Short-stature corn generated some buzz at this year’s Farm Progress Show.

Bayer corn ag systems lead Ryan Tichich says their Smart Corn System features hybrids that are about a third shorter than tall corn counterparts.

“And that brings about (at least) three immediate benefits. So we think about protection from lodging and green snap, those can be real challenges for growers mid to late season. It can rob yield (and) make harvest a mess.”

He tells Brownfield the other benefits are access to crops later in the season and plant density.

Stine Seed president Myron Stine says the Iowa-based company has been expanding its short stature corn lineup over the last decade.

“It’s a more efficient plant, higher yield, and higher management too at the same time. So it’s really the future of corn genetics.”
