Senator Baldwin now supports state wolf management

gray wolfA U.S. Senator from Wisconsin now wants Washington to address the wolf problems in the upper Great Lakes states.  Democrat Tammy Baldwin previously told Brownfield she wanted to let the federal courts continue to sort out the appropriate wolf pack size, but now says it’s time to remove the wolf from the endangered species list and let the states manage the packs.

Baldwin was encouraged by Wisconsin State Senator Tom Tiffany to lead on the issue and support rural communities that are losing livestock and pets to wolves.  Baldwin issued a statement Friday saying she voted in 2011 as a Member of Congress to delist wolves, and it’s time to do it again.  She says the science supports allowing the states to again manage the wolf population to improve safety for people and animals.

Language has been drafted for two separate bills in Congress that would delist wolves (by U.S. Senator Ron Johnson, Wisconsin Congressman Reid Ribble, and Minnesota Congressman Collin Peterson.)  Tiffany is hopeful that language will pass as part of the omnibus federal spending bill yet this year.

Baldwin says under state management, careful consideration should be given to how the 900 or so wolves in Wisconsin should be managed. Many conservationists and Native American Tribes have concerns about the health of the wolves.

  • I do not understand Baldwin’s stance on this. And I find her position tremendously concerning. I would like to see her voted out of office, and have felt this way for some time.
