Sen. Smith says lessons can be learned from House Farm Bill failure

Senate Ag Committee member Tina Smith says lessons can be learned from the House failing to move its farm bill forward.

The Minnesota Democrat tells Brownfield the legislation failed because it didn’t have bipartisan support on key issues like nutrition, crop insurance, and rural development.

She says that’s not the case in the Senate.

“Last week I sat down with both the Chairman, Pat Roberts from Kansas, and the Ranking Member, Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, and they both reiterated to me their determination to put forth a bipartisan bill.  That gives me hope.”

Smith adds farmers need the certainty of a farm bill.

“There’s so much challenge in farming and ranching right now with prices being low (and) worries about what’s going on with global trade.”

House Ag Committee chairman Mike Conaway says when their farm bill proposal is reconsidered June 22nd, the legislation will not include any changes.
