SCOTUS won’t hear state animal ag law challenges

The U.S. Supreme Court has declined to take up two challenges to animal agriculture confinement laws in California and Massachusetts.

The Missouri Attorney General’s office has led the case against California for its law requiring all eggs sold in the state to be from cage-free hens.

Missouri’s new Attorney General Eric Schmitt says he’s disappointed that the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear the case and that his office “will continue to fight for Missouri consumers and farmers and protect them from burdensome regulations.”

Indiana’s Attorney General is the lead plaintiff in the Massachusetts case, against the state law that blocks the sale of eggs, pork and veal in Massachusetts based on new standards against confinement.

The attorneys general argue that both laws restrict interstate commerce.

In all, 15 states are involved in those cases.
