Sand Creek ag teacher honored during Michigan FFA Convention

This year’s Outstanding Michigan Agricultural Educator of the Year says her career marries her parents’ professions of a farmer and a teacher.

Jennifer Wheeler has been teaching agriscience at Sand Creek in Lenawee County since 1996.

“Ag education is a must—students must know where their food is grown and how,” she says.  “The science that we can teach these students, the communication skills and leadership through FFA will be with them for their life.”

Wheeler tells Brownfield while her school is in a rural part of southeast Michigan, students have mixed backgrounds, and her classes can spark interest in a wide range of related careers.

“There are definitely so many different avenues that they have to pursue to get there—it’s almost as if I’m just touching the tip of the iceberg,” she says.

Wheeler was recognized at this week’s Michigan FFA State Convention by the Michigan Association of Agriscience Educators.
