Rising demand for US ethanol

The executive director of the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association says the US has a positive outlook for ethanol exports.

Monte Shaw tells Brownfield he’s seeing more countries increase ethanol use. “I think we’re going to have a good year, maybe even our second highest year on record of ethanol exports,” he said. “That’s even as we are still locked out of certain markets that used to be huge like China.”

He says agreements like the country’s recent memorandum of understanding with the Philippines will help. “It’s a commitment by the Philippines and the US to work on the technical specs, so that the Philippines can be confident that by bringing the US ethanol into their market, it’s going to be fine and work.”

Shaw says other top destinations for US ethanol products include Canada, India, and South Korea.
