Ricketts backs EATS Act

U.S. Senator Pete Ricketts says support is growing for a bill that would prohibit state and local governments from interfering with the production of agricultural goods in other states.

“We have got to make sure we’re sticking up for our producers,” he said.

The Nebraska Republican tells Brownfield the Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression (EATS) Act would block efforts like California’s Proposition 12.

“What California has proposed with their far radical left Proposition 12 is going to be a devastating blow,” he said. “It would require a lot of extra costs for our producers that are frankly unnecessary and harmful to animals.”

Proposition 12 bans the sale of pork, veal, and eggs in California from animals anywhere in the country whose confinement does not meet minimum space requirements.

Republican Congresswoman Ashley Hinson of Iowa has introduced the bill in the U.S. House.
