Restaurants, food companies form group to improve broiler chicken welfare

Seven food and restaurant companies say they’re working together to improve the welfare of broiler chickens.

Nestle USA, Panera Bread, Shake Shack, Target and three others have formed the U.S. Working Group for broiler chicken – assisted by Compassion in World Farming and Blue House Sustainability Consulting.

They say the goal is to explore “workable strategies and creative solutions” to transition supply chains with an eye on welfare standards as outlined in the Better Chicken Commitment. That document has standards which include chicken breed selection, spacing, slaughter methods and third-party auditing.
