Remnants of long winter slow Minnesota farmers

Farmers across southern Minnesota are dealing with remnants of a long winter.

Wayne Schoper with South Central College in Mankato says snow, ice, and frost continue to cause delays.

“We didn’t have a deep frost, but we did have early snow, early precipitation. And we certainly need that recharge and that’s been happening. I don’t think there’s little if any tillage going on yet.”

But with two weeks left in April, he tells Brownfield there’s still time.

“I think there’s some manure being hauled, we need that soil temperature to get up there around 50 degrees (in the seed zone) to germinate corn. So that’s got a ways to go yet.”

Schoper made these comments during Brownfield affiliate KNUJ’s Farm Forum Friday.

A large portion of southern Minnesota received snow over the weekend, but warmer weather is forecast this week.
