Reduced Chinese demand continues for dairy exports

The U.S. Dairy Export Council says total dairy product exports in April were down more than 20 percent from last year’s record volume because of lost sales to China.

Exports to China in April were down 64 percent from last year because of retaliatory tariffs and the impact of reduced demand from the African Swine Fever outbreak.

Sales to Mexico are improving with the most in the past 10 months reported during April.

Nearly 170,000 tons of dairy products moved during the month, which was valued at almost $500 million, down five percent from last year.  Cheese exports were up seven percent from 2018.

Large sales of cheese, fluid milk and cream, milk protein concentrate and whey protein isolate offset declines in whey, nonfat/skim milk powder, and lactose.
