Rain helps Ohio crops catch up

The multi-week dry spell ended in Ohio last week as farmers welcomed rains to their dry fields.  USDA reporters say farmers are still concerned that corn and soybean progress might have fallen behind historical averages because of the dry spell.  As of Sunday, 73% of topsoil now has adequate moisture and 7% has surplus moisture.

Fifty-two percent of Ohio’s corn is in good to excellent condition and is in the silking process.

Ninety-seven percent of the soybeans have emerged, and 33% of the beans are flowering with 5% of them already setting pods.

The winter wheat harvest is underway with 82% harvested for grain.

Second-crop alfalfa is 47% cut and other second-crop hay is 41% cut.
