Proposed Missouri law would add oversight to animal abuse training
Missouri livestock producers are pushing for a state law to create oversight for animal abuse training. The Humane Society of the United States and other activist groups are training law enforcement and other officials on how to identify animal abuse and neglect, according to Mike Deering, executive vice president of the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association.
“This extremist group has no business training law enforcement agencies on animal abuse and neglect when their sole mission is to put farmers and ranchers out of business,” Deering told Brownfield Ag News Friday at the association’s annual meeting in Columbia.
A proposed Missouri statute would require that training materials be certified by the State Veterinarian “by sound science,” stated Deering.
Senate Bill 797 is sponsored by Missouri Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Brian Munzlinger.
