Producers make more, pay less in August

Producers made more and paid less in August.

The USDA says the index of prices received increased 0.8%, with the livestock index 0.2% higher and crops gaining 0.8%. Prices were up for hogs, milk, market eggs, and sweet corn and down for corn, cotton, broilers, and lettuce. Marketings were higher for cattle, sweet corn, grapes, and tobacco, and lower for corn, soybeans, wheat, and strawberries.

The index of prices paid decreased by 0.5%, with lower prices for feeder pigs, feed grains, feeder cattle, and hay and forages cancelling out higher prices for complete feeds, wages, self-propelled machinery, and concentrates.

Year to year, the index of prices received was up 0.9%, crops were 2.6% lower and livestock was 4.5% higher, and the index of prices paid up 0.6%.
