Produce safety inspections expand in Michigan

This week the Michigan Department of Agriculture is beginning produce safety inspections on farms grossing more than $250,000 in annual food sales.

The department says the inspections are part of new guidelines in the Food Safety Modernization Act and initial visits will focus on education and compliance.  The inspections will include new Produce Safety Rule requirements including record-keeping, food safety plans, and farming procedures.

The department started inspecting farms grossing more than $500,000 in food sales earlier this year.
