President Biden issues executive order increasing competition for ag sector

President Biden has issued an executive order that would reduce the trend of corporate consolidation and increase competition in the ag industry.

The order, announced earlier today, directs USDA to consider new rules under the Packers and Stockyards Act making it easier to bring and win claims against chicken processors.

It also asks the agency to better define the “Product of the USA” label to increase transparency for consumers when buying meat.

The order asks USDA to increase opportunities for farmers to access additional markets through alternative food distribution systems like farmers markets and developing standards and labels.

And the order also encourages the Federal Trade Commission to limit equipment manufacturers from restricting farmer’s ability to repair their own equipment.

Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack is making a stop in Council Bluffs, Iowa later today to expand on President Biden’s announcement, and Brownfield’s Kellan Heavican will be on the ground to cover the event for Brownfield.
