Prepping for a divided government

As the mid-term election ballots are being counted an ag lobbyist is preparing for a divided government. With a divided government, the Russell Group’s Randy Russell tells Brownfield it could be very difficult to accomplish anything in Congress.

“I would expect a divided government means the Biden administration will move to do more executive orders and rulemaking.”

Russell says it could also make crafting the 2023 Farm Bill more challenging, especially if Republicans control the House by a thin margin.

“Having a five or six seat margin makes things difficult, because there’s the Freedom Caucus, the more conservative members, and several of them have traditionally not supported farm bills. The other side is it may also create an opportunity to work on a more bipartisan basis to get a bill out of the committee.”
