Potato harvest underway

A central Wisconsin potato grower says the harvest has begun in his part of the state. A.J. Bussan with Wysocki Farms in Plainfield, Wisconsin says, “Some of the farms have started harvesting potatoes for canning and some of the other processing uses.”

Bussan tells Brownfield their long harvest season begins today. “We’ll start digging for canning and then we’ll hopefully be done by October 15th and maybe a few days before that.”

Despite the dry June weather, Bussan says the crop is looking very good. “The crop looks really encouraging, with very nice size and shape, so a lot of real positive signs.”

Bussan says the Superior variety used for baking roasting, and processing is almost always what growers harvest first, and many are on the way to canning facilities already.  He says most potatoes in his region end up as a frozen processed product like French fries, with their biggest customer being McCain Foods.
