Post-emergent herbicide could be necessary

An extension crops educator says rapid weed growth might require post-emergent herbicide.

Dave Nicolai with the University of Minnesota is observing increased weed pressure resulting from wet conditions this spring, followed by a sudden change to hot and dry weather.

He tells Brownfield if farmers decide to use a post, be sure to follow the label.

“Those soybeans will develop rapidly.  You’ll get to R1 and R2, and some of these products will have to be discontinued at that point in time.  So you have to really track the growth stage.”

Nicolai says weed height is another important consideration.

“We always stress (that) you need to get them at that three to four inch level or smaller to really have good weed control.  So scouting for weeds is very important at this point.”

The University of Minnesota recommends a pre and post program, especially in soybeans.

Nicolai is seeing the proliferation of giant ragweed and water hemp, and says layering herbicides offers better control throughout the growing season.
