Planting is well underway for Southwestern Indiana farmer

Southwestern Indiana Farmer Mark Seib says field conditions have been just right for soybean planting.

“The normal is usually to plant corn and then go to soybeans, but this year we were looking at moisture at an inch-and-a-half deep to two-inches deep and dust on top,” he says. “So, we started planting soybeans and now we’re down to a little under 200 acres to finish up the soybean crop.”

He tells Brownfield corn planting is also underway.

“We’re about halfway done with the corn so we’re feeling very good,” he says.

Seib says planting conditions are much better than last year.

“April ninth of last year is when we started planting soybeans and corn the same day,” he says. “We planted for two days and then we sat for four weeks. I hope we don’t get into that scenario, but we have a lot planted at this point in time already and things are looking fairly well.”

Seib, a United Soybean Board Director, grows corn and soybeans in Posey County.
