Planting in Arkansas makes progress

Arkansas farmers had half the week available for fieldwork last week, with planting progress depending on where the rain fell.

The USDA says planting and emergence for major crops is ahead of average.

82% of corn is planted, compared to 69% on average, with 54% emerged, compared to the five-year average of 46%, with 65% of the crop called good to excellent.

43% of soybeans are planted and 26% have emerged, both ahead of the normal paces.

68% of Arkansas’ rice crop is planted and 34% of that has emerged, with 9% of cotton planted and 3% emerged.

The first hay cutting is 3% complete, with most of the state’s hay crop and pasture lands rated fair.

60% of the winter wheat crop is in good to excellent condition.
