Planting ahead of usual pace and nearing completion in Minnesota

Planting remains ahead of normal with most farmers nearing completion in Minnesota.

The latest weekly crop report from USDA says corn is 98 percent planted, one week ahead of last year and five days ahead of the five-year average.

Corn emergence reached 88 percent and 77 percent of the crop is rated good to excellent.

Soybean planting is nearly two weeks ahead of a year ago and eight days faster than normal at 94 percent complete.  The crop is 74 percent emerged with 79 percent in the good to excellent category.

Farmers are also wrapping up dry edible bean, potato, and sunflower planting.

The first cutting of alfalfa is nearing the halfway point, with the hay condition rating at 69 percent good to excellent.
