Perdue discusses timeline for coronavirus ag assistance programs

Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue, speaking Wednesday during the virtual meeting of CFTC’s Ag Advisory Committee, discussed the timeline for COVID-19 ag assistance programs.

“I’m hoping that our purchase and distribution of produce, dairy and meat products will be able to begin within two weeks,” Perdue said. “The direct support will require rulemaking but we hope to have signups beginning in late May, as quickly as we’re able to.”

USDA will spend three billion dollars on commodity purchase and distribution and 16 billion on direct payments to farmers whose operations have been impacted by the coronavirus outbreak.
