PEDv still present

Dr. Paul Sundberg, VP, Science and Technology, NPB (2)_web

While reported cases of the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus (PEDv) are down so far this winter, that doesn’t mean we’re out of the woods.

Speaking at the Ohio Pork Congress, Dr. Paul Sundberg, V.P. of Science and Technology at the National Pork Board says the virus is still present.

“Last year about 50% of the swine herd got infected, that means there’s still another 50% that’s not infected and susceptible to the disease,”Sundberg said. “We can’t get complacent and we have to keep the message of biosecurity and bio-containment and that focus for producers.”

In the meantime, Sundberg says several programs continue to monitor PEDv. But he says the only way to get on top of PEDv or any other animal health issue is to identify places and share information without compromising producer information.
