Ohio soybeans are better than they look

Northwest Ohio farmer Jan Layman says soybean yields in his area of the state have been exceptional.

“It’s kind of surprising. You look at them and they’re green as can be all across the field and the beans are 10 and 11 percent moisture. Yields are just phenomenal. That’s all I can say. Everyone I’ve talked to talks like they’re probably the best soybeans they’ve ever cut,” says Layman.

Layman farms in Hardin County in northwest Ohio. He says his soybean crop doesn’t look great at a glance, but has produced great crop yields.

“Been doing this for 40 years and they’re probably the best soybeans we’ve ever raised and they don’t look that way. They’re not super tall or anything, they’re just heavily podded and they’re filled,” says Layman.

Layman tells Brownfield the heavy rains following drought conditions in August helped the soybean crop significantly. Layman says he’s about 90% done with the soybean harvest and will then move on to corn.
