Ohio crops benefited from more rain last week

Rain showers last week kept Ohio’s crops developing well.  USDA statistician Cheryl Turner says soil moistures were up in the week ending Sunday with 81% of the topsoil reported as adequate or surplus.  She says farmers reported limited weed emergence in soybean fields.

Seventy-seven percent of the state’s corn is silking with 23% now in the dough stage.  Fifty-six percent of the corn is in good to excellent condition.

Eighty-two percent of the soybeans are blooming and 46% of the beans are setting pods.  Fifty-four percent of the beans are reportedly in good to excellent condition.

Hay cutting continues with second-cut alfalfa 87% finished and third-cut alfalfa now 24% finished.  Most other second-crop hay is in, and 8% of third crop has been cut.
