Northwest Iowa farmer has a quarter of his corn planted

A northwest Iowa farmer has about a quarter of his 2022 corn crop planted.

Kelly Nieuwenhuis of Primghar says he started with soybeans and switched to corn last Wednesday.

“Got about roughly 25 percent of our corn planted, so making progress.”

He tells Brownfield soils are cool, but warmer weather is on the way.

“Highs in the mid 60’s and lows in the 50’s, so I think we’ll get things warmed up.”

His area also caught nearly an inch of rain over the weekend with more in the forecast.  Nieuwenhuis suggests the moisture is welcome despite a halt to planting.

“Might not get a whole lot done this week, but we’re ready when conditions get right. We’ll hit it hard, and of course in today’s world with the equipment we’ve got we can get a lot done in a short time.”

Nieuwenhuis says most farmers around him are planting at a similar pace.
