Northern SD farmer prepares to plant

A farmer in northeastern South Dakota says he hopes to start planting corn and soybeans in a few days.

Jason Frerichs tells Brownfield snow is melting in the wind breaks, but most fields are shaping up. Frerichs says he’s trying to get the timing just right.

“We need to make sure we don’t mud in the crop or plant it when conditions aren’t quite right or the crop won’t get a good start.”

Frerichs says the later spring did not allow for spring wheat planting and instead, those fields will become corn. He also says the prevent plant chatter is fading.

“We’ve had a lot of moisture in the last few months that’s worked its way into the soil profile.”

Frerichs says all that’s needed is a little warmth, which is in the forecast later this week.
