Nebraska hosts seminar on global food security
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UN-L) will host 77 Fulbright scholars from nearly 50 countries this week for a Global Food Security Seminar.
Set for October 20th through the 24th, the event will showcase various people and groups working to advance sustainable, agriculture-led growth—with the goals of making food more available and more affordable for growing populations and increasing incomes of the poor.
Robin Bradley, an official of the U.S. State Department’s Fulbright program, says UN-L offers some very unique expertise in certain sectors of agriculture, “such as engineering, clean energy, irrigation, technology—they’ve also been a world leader in crop disease prevention since the 1940’s.”
Bradley says with the world’s population expected to reach nine billion by 2040, the question of how to feed the world has become more pressing. And she says some current issues are complicating matters even more.
“Some of the specific current challenges include climate change, food price spikes, and evolving energy and financial markets that are very inconsistent right now,” says Bradley.
Bradley says the visiting Fulbright scholars will include students in ag and environmental sciences, biology, economics and engineering. Among their stops will be the Beadle Center and Food Processing Center in Lincoln and the Agricultural Research and Development Center at Mead.
