Nebraska farmer says soil profile desperately needs a recharge

An Eastern Nebraska farmer says he’s concerned that soil moisture is less than ideal to start the 2023 crop.

Quentin Connealy farms an hour north of Omaha along the Missouri River and says the region is well below average precipitation. “I’d say we’re already 5 inches behind that already.”

He tells Brownfield the soil profile needs recharging very soon. “We’re starting out with a lower profile already.  It’s been a dry winter, and we didn’t have much snow over here on the east side of the state. Luckily, we caught some early rains and it froze in there. It’s been kind of a lack of moisture here this winter.”

Connealy says, at one point, the area was 10 inches below average, but hopes a weekend storm system will bring some relief.
