Nebraska farmer anticipates big harvest

A south-central Nebraska farmer is anticipating a big harvest this fall.

Steve Hosier of Giltner, Nebraska says this summer’s weather was just about perfect in his area and he thinks it will be reflected in his corn and soybean yields.

Before rains set in this week, Hosier was able to harvest some soybeans planted on dryland corners—the non-irrigated corners of center pivots.  “(They were) running between 70 and 80 bushels on the dryland. I’m anxious to get to the irrigated,” he says.

Hosier thinks corn yields could run well over 200 bushels per acre. “The corn looks really exciting. I’m excited to get to it. There will be some 240 in this area under irrigation—and the dryland is going to be phenomenal with the water we had this year.”

With drier weather in the forecast, Hosier plans to be resume harvesting soybeans by this weekend.
