Nebraska Farm Bureau welcomes DOJ meatpacking investigation

A recent Bloomberg report said the U.S. Department of Justice has made a formal demand for information from the country’s four biggest meatpackers as they investigate potential antitrust violations.

Nebraska Farm Bureau president Steve Nelson says he’s pleased to hear the DOJ is moving forward with the investigation.

“We need to know if antitrust laws are being followed and if they’re not, then we need to look at what kind of changes we can make to laws and regulations in order that we have a transparent—or transparent as possible—marketplace for producers,” Nelson says.

The four companies that are reportedly being investigated are Tyson, JBS, Cargill and National Beef.
