NCGA says CFAP a first step
The president of the National Corn Growers Association says the direct payments to farmers through the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program is a first step to getting farmers and their customers “back on solid footing.”
Kevin Ross, who farms in southwestern Iowa (Minden), says NCGA’s recent analysis of what farmers need projects a $50-dollar per acre average revenue decline for the 2019 corn crop with higher losses expected for the 2020 crop. Two of corn’s largest uses – livestock feed and ethanol – have been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ross says corn farmers are used to uncertainty and are leaders in developing strong risk management tools but the pandemic is unlike anything they’ve experienced before.
