National Corn Growers want a formal dispute on Mexico’s corn ban

A trade and public policy specialist would like to see the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative initiate a formal dispute against Mexico on its biotech corn ban.

Angus Kelly with the National Corn Growers Association tells Brownfield the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative is done with the technical consultation of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement. The Biden administration can now initiate a formal case.

“If they don’t do that, we’ll have to look at legal recourse to encourage the U.S. Trade Representative to go ahead and pull the trigger.”

He says a dispute process would take up to two years. Currently, Kelly says Mexico is still taking yellow GMO-corn for livestock feed, but white GMO-corn is not being accepted for human consumption.

“Our white corn farmers are trying to figure out if they can or cannot continue to grow the crop.”

Kelly says it could be more difficult for white corn producers in the United States to move the corn they produce this year. Brownfield interviewed Kelly during NAFB Washington Watch this week.

  • STOP GROWING GMO CORN. ALL GMO’s ARE POISONS. MEXICO knows this; what is wrong with US Corn Farmers. They will wake up to this fact sooner or later. Sooner would be better for everyone.
