Mostly mild December in much of Michigan

The USDA says it’s been a mild winter so far for Michigan.

Average temperatures were four degrees warmer than normal and while precipitation was about a half inch below average, soil moisture levels did improve during December.

73% of winter wheat is in good to excellent condition, with adequate snow cover in central counties and the Thumb, but light coverage in southern areas of the state.

Counties on the Lake Michigan shoreline do have adequate snow cover, but the ground hadn’t frozen, allowing fruit growers to prune older orchards.

Activities also included livestock care, grain and hay movement, and manure hauling as needed.

The USDA’s weekly crop progress and condition numbers resume in April.
